A new support worker’s first shift is in someone’s home. Until then, the person’s plan is something they have read, not something they have done.

Humble Guest is a practice home and an induction course for new support workers in supported living, for autistic adults and adults with a learning disability.

They practise first in Tom’s flat. Tom is fictional. It is his home and his tenancy, so they knock, say who they are, and wait.

Tom: “Tom. Just Tom.”

Tom: “You can come in. Shoes off, please.”

On a hard afternoon, drilling starts next door.

Tom: “What time is it? What time is it?”

They follow his behaviour support plan: notice the early signs, offer his ear defenders, then step back and call for help. There is no holding or restraint anywhere in it.

Each visit ends with a report. The manager sees what was practised, and what to watch for on the next shift.

Short chapters follow, with Tom’s plan always to hand.

The manager signs off each task after watching real work.

It is not the Care Certificate, not Oliver McGowan training, and not restraint training.

Humble Guest. Practise the plan before the shift.
